Helping Hands
For those of you that find knitting difficult due to painful joints, poor eyesight or other disabilities, a fantastic cure has come along - in the shape of David Hill, creator of the Helping Hands Knitting Aid.
“I designed the aid for my final major as part of my Design degree” says David. “It’s for anybody with less than nimble fingers from children with disabilities to the elderly.”
To understand the problems faced, David had to learn to knit using gloves that had wire coiled around the fingers to restrict movement in his hands, elbows and shoulders.
“I analysed knitters at Stitch ‘n’ Bitch meetings and tried to empithise by rendering myself disabled. I’m not the best knitter in the world but I am planning on completing a couple of scarves as Christmas presents!” says David.
“My inspiration came from my Nan, who suffers with arthritis. I wanted to design something to help her and I asked her, if there was one thing in the world she wanted, what would it be - and she said to be able to knit again.
“I did not want to create a solution where knitters would have to change their style
too much” comments David, “I wanted it to be as if they where knitting by themselves.”
The aid works through a very simple, yet effective method. The user creates two ball joints which hold the needles, gives support, takes the weight and gives greater freedom over knitting.
“The product itself is a lap-based support, made from a specially designed birch ply frame” says David. With this comes a set of ten balls, each which is shaped to hold a different sized needle. Any needle can be used, allowing knitters to continue using their favourite ones.
“You can move the needle back and forth and in every direction enabling you to create any stitch.”
“I’ve made about twenty so far but have given them away to my Nan and her friends,” explained David. ”I also plan to give some away to Stitchlinks and Arthritis Care as soon as they are in production.”
“Hopefully Helping Hands will be the first of many products aimed at helping people. I believe that our gift to be able to manipulate our surroundings should not be wasted, do we really need another fancy chair?”
